Want to relax and release stress?
Well Kirtan could be your answer.
I plan to run a number of workshops next year enjoying and relaxing as you sing/chant beautiful ancient mantras. We will sing together simple melodies in call and response style and don’t be concerned about how well you sing, just relax and enjoy the meditative benefits. Tuition and words are provided and explained.
Kirtan, is singing/chanting beautiful ancient mantras/melodies in a call and response style. It’s a shared offering and you don’t have to be concerned with how well you sing, just enjoy the benefit it brings to you.
Another way to describe Kirtan is perhaps a singing version of your physical yoga practice. It is a truly beautiful way to express the profound feeling and experiences that come to us during meditation and in our physical asana practice. It is a great way to release stress and tension, relax and melt into a larger experience,
some may know it as Kirtan-yoga, as an integral part of bhakti-yoga, which is the yoga of developing pure spiritual love.
Often described as people coming together Kirtan is a family-like atmosphere within a music session which gives the result of deep meditation. More specifically, it is the call and response singing used in spiritual tradition from India.
Kirtanis is a 'sanskrit' word meaning "to chant" referring to the process of chanting and it includes a sense of repeating and describing, which makes it very simple to learn. Specifically, it refers to the glorification of the Supreme. You may doubtlessly be familiar with other sanskrit words such as, yoga, avatar, mantra, guru and karma, which are in use worldwide and perhaps in the coming years, we can expect kirtan to become another word that will be more familiar as it starts to experience general usage around you.
The origins of Kirtan go back to India where people have been singing about Rama, Krishna, Govinda, etc in their local languages and in Sanskrit, for a millennia as a non-denominational language for the universal Spirit; the song of the soul. Traditionally it is sung in Sanskrit, but in today’s times it can be heard in many different languages, including English. You can think of it as a singalong.
The Kirtan concert is not your typical music concert either. Everyone sits on the floor or a chair with the performers being very accessible. The 'wallah' (leader) sings the mantra and the audience sings it back! The song/chant can go on from a few minutes for as long as maybe 30 minutes. There are a number of popular singers who tour the globe and can be easily found on line, check out Deva Premal and Miten who are currently touring the world. Also, another well-known name in this area is Snatum Kaur. You can download these and other New Age singers from most music download sites. So, finally as we sing together we may experience a deepness within yourself and everyone there and when the music stops you may feel relaxed with a quiet mind and a peaceful smile. Perhaps a must in this modern, too busy to think straight world!!!
